Input channels 1-8 have optional "Phantom power" and thus can be used for either condenser or dynamic microphones. Comparing to dynamic microphones, condensers are less rugged and more sensitive and have wider bandwidth but require additional boosting power. Input channels 9-16 and all other input jacks do not have Phantom power and thus CANNOT be used for condenser microphones. All input channels and other input jacks can be used for any balanced "line level sources". Channels 1-8 should not be used for unbalanced sources if the "Phantom power" is ON which will be explained next.
In order to use a condenser, the "Phantom power" switch on the back of the mixer must be set to the "ON" position, which should be already in that position now. "Phantom power" is utilized with the first 8 XLR inputs (Channels 1-8) and cannot be switched ON or OFF individually. XLR stands for "Extra Long Run" (a circular plug with three prongs aligning in a triangular position).
The current configuration of inputs should be labeled below the input faders on the Mixer. If it is not labeled, the input should be available for use (e.g., CD, additional wireless microphone.). The SEL buttons are used for setting up each individual channel (See the Mixer's manual for details but don't need to konw about it now for basic operation). The ON buttons are equivalent to MUTE. The "20dB PAD switch" and "GAIN control" have already been preset by the Sound And Light Team (SALT) if the channel is being used and thus do not need adjustment. The "GAIN control" can be lower to avoid feedback or echoing if necessary. The usual setting is below or at mid-point of the dial. Therefore, the only things you may need to control are all the ON buttons and/or "Input channel faders" except the "RTN/SEND fader" which is the control for internal feedback usually fixed at between 20 to 40. The usual setting of an "Input channel fader" is 5 or above and try not to go below 0; otherwise, there will be echoing.
Note that the "2-track input jacks" (2TR IN) and "Stereo input jacks" (ST IN) are sharing the same input channel, but the "Stereo input jacks" has higher priority. In other words, "2-track input jacks" will be disable whenever the "Stereo input jacks" are plugged in.
Among the "LCD function buttons", the RECALL button is used to recall stored setup of all input channels and sources for a particular setting (use "PARAMETER wheel" to select after the button has been pressed). Do not store any setting unless you know what to do. Appendix B shows the console settings data stored as Scene Memory inside the Mixer. The METER and SEND4 buttons are used to select the control of the front big Main Speakers in the Sanctuary and the small Monitor Speakers above the Choir, respectively. Once the METER has been pressed, all the "Input channel faders" are input volume controls applied to the Main Speakers. Likewise, when the SEND4 is pressed, all the "Input channel faders" are input volume controls applied to the Monitor Speakers. Note that the "Stereo output fader" is used for both Main and Monitor Speakers at the same time.
Consult the Mixer's manual for the usage of all other buttons or inputs and outputs. Note that the current setting of the Mixer will be stored in a temporary buffer when its power is being turned off. That setting will be restored when it is powered on next time.
The ceiling speakers inside the Kitchen and Nursery have their own independent volume control mounted on the wall by the door, but the ceiling speakers in the Foyer do not. As a result, if concurrent worships are held in the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall, all the ceiling speakers should be off by turning off the "QSC 370" power amplifier.
When the preacher or announcer is using a lapel wireless microphone, make sure the pulpit microphone closed to him/her is off (mute). If an interpreter is standing next to him/her, leave the pulpit microphone closest to the interpreter on. Alternately, use another lapel wire or wireless microphone for the interpreter, then both the pulpit microphones must be mute. Remember to turn it back on when somebody else comes up to the pulpit and speak without a lapel wireless microphone. Do not curve or bend the flexible antenna attached to the transmitter of the lapel wireless microphone to avoid poor reception or damage to the antenna.
Currently, the gain of the wireless hand-held microphone system is small; therefore, remember to increase the gain on the mixer if necessary.
During Sunday worship, normally if possible and applicable, start recording right before the choir or special music performs and stop it after the sermon. Label and give the recorded tape either to the church secretary or Pastor.
